Description

In April 1939, a Taiwanese construction firm called the Hsieh Chih Association (predecessor to the Tatung Co.) accepted the contract to construct the Taipei Municipal Office building, now the Central Building of the Executive Yuan. The project was completed in three years and four months. The four-story building’s structure is made of steel and steel-reinforced concrete. The site area covered 24,598 square meters, and the floor space totaled 11,144 square meters. The architect was Ide Kaoru, a member of the construction department of the Japanese governor-general’s office and a graduate of Tokyo Imperial University (now the University of Tokyo). Many of Taiwan’s famous buildings were designed by Ide, such as the Judicial Yuan building, Taipei Zhongshan Hall, and National Taiwan University’s former main library and College of Liberal Arts.
